The Structure Behind the Practice: Enterprise Architecture Frameworks and Methods

Diagram showing the relationship between frameworks, methods, and methodologies in enterprise architecture, with icons representing scaffolding, a stepwise process, and a flowchart.

In Defining Enterprise Architecture: A Practical Approach, we identified three essential responsibilities of Enterprise Architecture:

  1. Translate strategy into technology execution.
  2. Integrate policies from across the organization.
  3. Design solutions.

Enterprise Architecture Requires Structure, Not Just Intent

It’s a straightforward list—useful and accurate. But it’s also incomplete.

That’s because doing these things requires more than just intent. It requires a structure and an approach.

Enterprise Architecture as an Organizational Function

Enterprise Architecture isn’t simply a discipline; it’s also an organizational function. And organizational functions, unlike philosophies, need apparatus: the scaffolding used to translate ideas into action over time.

That scaffolding arrives in the form of frameworks, methods, and methodologies, which are specific to architecture, plus a few operational constructs that are more general.

Defining Frameworks, Methods, and Methodologies

To move forward with clarity, we need to define a few foundational terms. Together, they establish the vocabulary for the approach to Enterprise Architecture—the structural constructs, procedural elements, and organizing mechanisms that allow Enterprise Architecture to operate as a coherent discipline.

What Is an Enterprise Architecture Framework?

An Enterprise Architecture framework defines the structure, components, and relationships of architecture assets.

What Is an Enterprise Architecture Method?

An Enterprise Architecture method defines the process for developing an architecture.

What Is an Enterprise Architecture Methodology?

An Enterprise Architecture methodology unites frameworks, methods, and governance into a cohesive system for organizing architecture work.

How Frameworks, Methods, and Methodologies Work Together

A framework provides the conceptual scaffolding for how architecture is organized and understood.

Methods tell you how the work is performed.

And a methodology defines the complete approach for how architecture is executed across an organization.

We’ll examine each individually in the articles that follow.
